A very rainy, muddy, rooty hike on Switzer/Marriot trail located near my new abode; I gave the group hike a miss because it was at Treadwell which I hiked frequently during my housesit and did not want to drive the ten miles to the other end of town! Then to the library to fetch a new book The Light Eaters then to enjoy a salmon donut at Jellyfish and fish tacos at Deckhand Daves...decided to do a bit of touristy stuff before they close down for the winter. Also found that my favorite Mexican place for almost forty years is closing down for good, family run but maybe no family left with interest to continue? Plus the water shut off again at rental unit this morning!
30 August 2024 Friday - Juneau Alaska
End of season whale watch for us tourism volunteers in the pouring rain but saw heaps of whales, even one doing a breach! And I won a raffle prize for $50 voucher at TK Maguires restaurant!
29 August 2024 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
I have spent too much time trying to set up the two printers located at this rental and another donated by a friend but all three have issues so went to Costco to buy Epson Eco Printer, which does work but not impressed....miss my HP that I bought in Florida and gave to my sister!
28 August 2024 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Water shut off at the rental unit again! Lunch at TK Maguires with the woman for whom I housesat, great time catching up.
27 August 2024 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
They paid a woman to clean this rental but she did not do a very good job so am spending heaps of time cleaning.
26 August 2024 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Early morning to wash some clothes and then the water shut off! Found that these buildings are on a water monitor due to a flood a few years ago when a business tenant left the water running. This apartment has been vacant for over a year so they need to reprogram for me. It is the only unit in the complex that is an apartment, all other units are either storage units or small businesses.
25 August 2024 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
A very rainy day for my move from housesit on south end of Douglas Island to rental on the mainland of Juneau! Even though the housesit is only a few miles from downtown Juneau, being closer to Juneau seems so much closer to all the amenities. And for winter, it will be nice not to be in the shadow of the mountains all the time, but to be in the sunshine!

22 August 2024 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Morning yoga with Carol
21 August 2024 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Sun is back for the day so walk at Treadwell Mine trail just down the hill from my housesit which I will leave this weekend. A friend was playing music on a handmade string instrument at the Treadwell Mine Office (open-air and renovated from mining days) where the acoustics are wonderful. He had converted a Christmas cookie tin into the banjo portion!
20 August 2024 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
The rains continue for morning followup with my physician.
19 August 2024 Monday - Juneau Alaska
The rains have returned for a very foggy day! What a mess to set up internet, wifi, tv...you need separate boxes (some for free and some for purchase) and logon ids/passwords for each one! Spent most of day getting this set up, after I had a lovely morning with my friend who volunteers at the House of Wickersham...she departs soon on a cruise then back to Texas.

18 August 2024 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Great gathering at the House of Wickersham to bid farewell to our friend the volunteer docent.
17 August 2024 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Hike with the group along the Horse Tram Trail then visit to the Arboretum and Shrine of St Therese (gotta make all the stops when you drive thirty miles out the road)
16 August 2024 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Morning volunteer work at the Salvation Army, I am amazed at the amount of stuff that we receive!
15 August 2024 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Gorgeous sunny day so gave yoga a miss and hiked the trails of north Douglas Island. Firstly the Rainforest loop which has become a cruise ship tour destination so limited parking (only allow permit parking for the tour bus) and too many folks on the trail. Then the Outer Point loop which is more of a challenge for tourists and for which they do not have permits but more fun with slippery boards and mud holes around the beaver ponds! Then the Fish Creek trail, a bit smelly due to spawning salmon but lovely hike around the point. And always great to meet a few locals for a chat.
14 August 2024 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Afternoon walk on Treadwell Mine trail.
13 August 2024 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Morning walk on the flume with the ladies and a midway stop at Mary Ann's for lemonade and snacks. These folks are Juneau pioneers so tis wonderful to hear their stories and history of all these older homes. We also saw a few mountain goats on Mt Juneau.
12 August 2024 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Made final decision on a rental so busy getting keys made and organizing electric and internet.
11 August 2024 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Short walk at Kingfish Pond then along the boat docks where I had great chat with friend who lives on her sailboat. I walked by the Glacier Seal boat which I remembered taking to Glacier Bay in the 1980's, great chat with the newer owners. This weekend was the 78th Salmon Derby in which I had participated in the past.
10 August 2024 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Hike with the group on the Dzantik'i Heeni trail and the Davis Meadows/Marriott trail along several creeks then joined the monthly city museum two hour geology walk of downtown Juneau. Rain was predicted but turned out to be gorgeous sunny day!
9 August 2024 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Morning volunteer work at Salvation Army store.
8 August 2024 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Because of paving today, we are not allowed to drive on the road for the next twelve hours, which is fine, enough here to keep me busy, with afternoon walk down the hill for walk on Treadwell trail...another very sunny day!
7 August 2024 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Another sunny warm day for walk through the Mendenhall Wetlands along the dike trail.
6 August 2024 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Our annual record breaking news of the jokulhlaup/glacial outburst flood on the Mendenhall River! Since 2011, the Mendenhall River has experienced several large outburst floods that originate at Mendenhall Glacier’s Suicide Basin. The floods have resulted in inundated homes along the river, flooded and evacuated campsites, and closure of several residential roads. The flooding extended further inland but no homes were lost this year.
Morning walk with the 'older ladies' from Twin Lakes to the Pioneer Home to visit our friends there who have retired from hiking, then back to the housesit in the afternoon to listen to the constant beepbeep of the road builders, they now tell us that paving will be on Thursday.
5 August 2024 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Resting my aching knees today from yesterday's downhill hike, lying in the sun on the deck and watching the guys dig up the street for repaving. Sunshine and warm temps predicted for remainder of week. When I housesat here in previous years, the battery charger for the mower was in the garage. They have since cleaned out the garage and I was not able to find it, which I needed because after two mows, the batteries have died. But what I thought was a telecom device in the hallway under the bench is really the charger so back in business for mowing the lawn today.
4 August 2024 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Free parking on weekend downtown so parked and used my free pass to take the tram up Mt Roberts on this very sunny day! Walked Alpine Loop to the new Father Brown cross then met a man visiting from Virginia (a CPA doing work tomorrow with Legislative Audit) so we decided to walk down Mt Roberts then walk the flume back to town, gave him my fifty cent tour! Fish tacos at Deckhand Dave's.
3 August 2024 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Early morning walk at the glacier to the falls, trying to beat the cruise ship crowd, but barely.
Great gathering at the House of Wickersham to bid farewell to our friend the volunteer docent.
