First trip to Juneau Alaska since 2019!

30 June 2021 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Early arrival at storage unit for loading of all my stuff into boxes for shipment to Florida!

29 June 2021 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
A few clouds have arrived.

28 June 2021 Monday - Juneau Alaska
A record hot day here (over 80) and in the lower 48 (temps over 100). Morning walk for coffee with my neighbor at the hotel, she normally lives on her sailboat but during covid, she decided to move to hotel since no showers available at the closed gym/pool locations. Wonderful lunch with friends at the new Forbidden Peak brewery with outdoor seating overlooking Auke Bay (just across the street from my housesit). Fresh halibut from the Red Spruce Cafe, which is part of the brewery.

27 June 2021 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Another very foggy morning then sunshine.  Volunteered at the visitor center then tram up Mt Roberts for hike on alpine trail with friend.....gorgeous sunny day with heaps of wildflowers.

26 June 2021 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Very very foggy morning then sunshine for our hike on the Amalga horse tram trail, what a change from the 1980's when we could barely find it in the muck, now fully gravelled!

25 June 2021 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Had considered walk at low tide of -4.2 on north Douglas but it is pouring down rain so opted to pack a few more boxes in my storage unit and to visit friends who volunteer at the Salvation Army store downtown.

24 June 2021 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Happy Strawberry Full Moon, which we cannot see!
The rain and wind have arrived so stayed indoors doing research.

23 June 2021 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
A big rainstorm is predicted for this evening so drove to Eaglecrest ski area for an uphill hike and oh so very quiet except for the birds. Juneau is in the Tongass National Forest which is the largest national forest in the United States (17 million acres) established in 1907.

22 June 2021 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Morning visit with hiking friend from days past, and at 85, she is now having some medical issues so is great to see her again. Afternoon hike on the airport dyke trail. Petrol price has increased from $2.95 to $3.05 per gallon.

21 June 2021 Monday - Juneau Alaska
No food or drink this morning before having ultrasound of innards. Seems like the one I had in Florida may have been a false positive for increased size of gall bladder polyps, they have stayed same size so  hopefully no need to remove my gall bladder!

20 June 2021 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Happy Solstice and Happy Fathers Day!
Volunteer work at the visitor center where again we had independent travellers and folks off the Lindblad National Geographic and Uncruise cruise ships with a bigger interest in hiking trails than jewelry shops.

19 June 2021 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
A gorgeous sunny day for our hike up Perseverance Trail then enjoyed free cooked salmon at the Maritime Festival on the docks.

18 June 2021 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Rainy then overcast day in Juneau for my friends to arrive from Idaho. Met with the man who bought my home back in 2007 for a tour of all the work that he has done, looking good!

17 June 2021 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Another sunny day so bummer that I have morning appointment with my family doctor (which I made three months ago) then lunch of grilled halibut at the Sand Bar then a walkabout at the glacier where I saw mama and two cubs then to the waterfall!

16 June 2021 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
A very rainy then overcast day. Met with the movers to confirm all to be packed in two weeks.

15 June 2021 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Spent time at storage unit packing contents of file cabinet into boxes

14 June 2021 Monday - Juneau Alaska
The sound of the rain on the roof is wonderful and the views of the quiet harbor are beautiful! I walked down to the docks to meet friend who arrived last eve on her sailboat then back to storage unit to rearrange a few items. Afternoon visit to the Hot Bite for Reeses peanut butter milkshake then walk on the docks.

13 June 2021 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Morning volunteer shift at the visitor center. We normally work Sunday mornings at the kiosk but it is now closed and only one visitor center is open. We had 21 folks but it is such a change from the cruise ship clientele, these folks want to know about hiking trails not jewelry shops, which are now all closed anyway. I have heard from a few visitors that they deliberately chose this year to visit Alaska because there were no cruise ships.

12 June 2021 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Drove over newly surfaced bridge to Douglas Island and walked the Treadwell historical mining trail at south end of island, which I would walk frequently when housesitting up the hill. Then drove to end of road at north Douglas for views of the glacier and up to Eaglecrest ski area where I saw marmot feeding on the grass.

11 June 2021 Friday - Juneau Alaska
I try to visit my storage unit every day and get one more little thing done! I have decided that I do not need the dresser that I have had forever so boxed up all my clothes in it and now to find someone to help me move it to the consignment shop. I then joined some friends at the city museum for the historical walking tour of the city, which I had always wanted to do over the years, but never took the time to do it....we had so much fun. The tour ended at my friend's B&B for coffee and homemade pastries.

10 June 2021 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Morning appointment at the eye doctor then walk on the flume which I have jogged in years past. They spent the past two years rebuilding the flume trail but in the process chopped down too many trees which caused a mudslide to cover it...such smart engineers? Then a lunch of chili hot dog at the Triangle pub and then visit to library and visitor center where I saw more friends. Visited the State museum for viewing of new textile exhibit of Ravenstail and Chilkat robes.

9 June 2021 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Another rare sunshine and warm day for our hike at Pt Bridget, the wildflowers were wonderful! Stopped to photograph bear eating at side of road and returned to Auke Bay in afternoon to see seals in the harbor. Chowder soup and salad at local cafe.

8 June 2021 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Woke up to eagles and whales and sunshine! Walkabout downtown then lunch with friends at el sombrero.

7 June 2021 Monday - Juneau Alaska
After no sleep last evening due to resurfacing of Douglas Bridge with not only noise of machinery but also of the beep beep beep backup sounds, I walked the seawalk along the water at 3am and then on the road at 4 for visit to my local haunts with no one else around. Firstly, to the end of Basin Road where they have removed my favorite toilet then to Cope Park where they have locked the toilets. All these were so open "back in the day" of my jogging! Cope Park has become a "Disney World" with the redone tennis/pickle ball courts, new children playground, bocce ball and cornhole games, and the new mountain bike track which has destroyed the beauty of the park. Then a stop at Brotherhood Bridge for views of our disappearing glacier then to the glacier for short walkabout. Visited my storage unit to gauge what needs to be done...moving boxes will be difficult with "damaged" shoulders but hope to get some help. Wonderful fresh halibut at the Sand Bar then afternoon walkabout downtown where I did run into a few friends, as per the normal in Juneau. So nice to be in Juneau in summer with no cruise ships.
Just a few weeks ago I found that a friend wanted a housesit but decided to keep the hotel room and share the housesit with another friend who will arrive in Juneau before I leave. Had considered not moving to her place out the road until next week but with the bridge construction, decided I better get some sleep tonight after two days of none.

6 June 2021 Sunday - Florida to Juneau Alaska
Early morning flight Tampa to Seattle to Juneau, long day of flying with four hour time difference. Thank goodness I used my miles for first class seat, so much nicer a flight. Had great chat with woman from Seattle who just purchased home in Florida. Second seat mate was tuned into his electronics so no time for talk for him.
Arrival in Juneau was easy, no covid testing and no asking for vaccine card! I had booked hire car with Enterprise several months ago because now there are none available. It appears that Hertz is totally shut down and gone and both Avis and Budget will not rent to locals. Enterprise rented to me with requirement of $300 plus 20% of cost as deposit. The first car she gave me was ugly blue Rav4 then she realized the gas gauge was broken then she offered me Jeep Cherokee but I was concerned about tires....then her worker came in and had just cleaned another Rav4, much nicer color of grey and with sunroof, and better tires, so now enjoying my car! Checked into hotel downtown and did a bit of a drivearound since no cruise ships means no crowded downtown streets!

5 June 2021 Saturday - Largo Florida
Midday taxi to hotel at airport. Decided to overnight at airport for early Sunday morning flight to Juneau and got a room right away. I had hoped to get a pastry for tomorrow's breakfast from the coffee shop since they will be closed when I depart but they were closing at noon when I arrived at hotel, so they gave me pastries and banana for free since they were going to toss them.

3 June 2021 Thursday - Largo Florida
Morning walkabout, very hot and humid today. Visit to autozone to purchase "knife switch" recommended by my neighbor, all these years I have done manual disconnect of battery terminals and now find that I could have done it with just a switch!

2 June 2021 Wednesday - Largo Florida
Morning coffee at the clubhouse then ladies lunch out at Acropol greek restaurant.

1 June 2021 Tuesday - Largo Florida
Another very warm day for our walk at Walsingham Park.
