June 2019 - Juneau Alaska

Point Bridget State Park hike

Long term travel plans are cruise from San Francisco to Sydney in September.

30 June 2019 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Morning volunteer work at the kiosk....and the smoke from the fires in the north have made for a heavy haze and a glowing orange sun.

29 June 2019 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
A few clouds have moved in, or is it smoke from the fires in the north.

28 June 2019 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Another gorgeous sunny hot day with views of boats fishing on the water. The ladies of Main Street (and me as a former) meet for lunch on last Friday of the month and this month we have been invited by the owner of Alaska Capital Inn for lunch of salad nicoise at the Inn, how lovely!

27 June 2019 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Wonderful walkabout at the Shrine of St Therese enjoying the many marmots basking in the sun....then to my other housesit to see how the leaking water pipe project is progressing. We now must wait for the insurance adjuster to fly down from Fairbanks for their inspection before any repair work can begin and before the install of water heater so plan to stay out the road a few more days, maybe to enjoy a bit more quiet during the fourth.

26 June 2019 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
A gorgeous sunny day! Forecast is for temps close to 80 all week! The group was doing a mostly wooded flat long trail (over nine miles) to Herbert Glacier so I opted for more sunny hike along Herbert River to the Boy Scout Camp with beautiful meadows of wildflowers.... then visit to Ernest Gruening State Historic Park at Amalga Harbor and then visit to the Eagle Valley Lodge.

25 June 2019 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
The plumber and the carpet cleaners arrived (although both late) to replace the damaged copper water pipe with pex and to pull the hot water heater and to dry the floor underneath.....with no hot water, I moved back to 19 mile housesit. It is good thing I have friends who like to travel, although it means having to clean their house again!

24 June 2019 Monday - Juneau Alaska
In my effort to reduce postal mail, I rang the State of Alaska and requested no retirement newsletter but that cannot be done. The State is required to send this and the only way they can do this is via postal mail even though there is an electronic copy on their website!
Driving the three miles from Douglas to Juneau is a real challenge because the road is being rebuilt and there is one lane traffic....and today was even worse. The traffic going onto Douglas Island was backed up across the bridge to Juneau because the traffic leaving Douglas was behind the dump truck that needed to pick up every rubbish bin along the route. Why are people getting more and more stupid!

23 June 2019 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Worked as onboard greeter on the Queen Elizabeth. This is the fifth and final visit of the QE to Juneau this summer, it continues from here through Panama Canal and up the east coast then across to Southampton.

22 June 2019 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Rainy day hike up Perseverance Trail.

21 June 2019 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Much needed massage then afternoon volunteer work at the International Food Bloggers Conference then up the tram for short walkabout on the loop trail, beautiful warm sunny day with great views.

20 June 2019 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Woke up to find that the wet floor did not appear improved with the water turned off locally so rang my housesit's daughter again and the son in law arrived early to go down into the crawlspace to turn off the main line and found heaps of water in the crawl space. So rang the plumber who came in the afternoon to cut a hole in the wall and found a leak in the pipe in the wall.....and then the carpet cleaners arrived to install air dryers for the carpet, the challenge is the pet liner! It appears that the leak has been going on for sometime but was not detected earlier due to water going under pet liner, not liked much by folks who need to clean up after water leaks.
Good news is that my visit to endodonist showed no need for another root canal!

19 June 2019 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Morning visit to the local pharmacist for my new version shingles shot #1 which was very painful for several hours then afternoon volunteer work on the Star Princess and free buffet luncheon. Home to my housesit to find a wet carpet floor in the lower hallway so turned off the nearby sink water line and contacted my housesit's daughter who lives in Juneau.

18 June 2019 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Another day of heavy rain, morning doctor appointment for annual checkup then senior lunch at the church in Douglas.

17 June 2019 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Going through my books in storage, what I think are treasures are not considered treasures to the used book store folks, oh well, time to bid them farewell!

16 June 2019 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
and the rains continue.....

15 June 2019 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Hiked up Salmon Creek (to the Powerhouse and up to the new benches but not to the top of the dam this time) with the Saturday hiking group and we made it back to the cars before the rains started. Petrol down ten cents from yesterday, price $3.59 per gallon.

14 June 2019 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Spent more time getting organized and retrieving stuff from my storage unit that I will use at my housesit for the next three months.

13 June 2019 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Morning cleaning and packing up to move from this housesit to next housesit where I will be for next three months

12 June 2019 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
More rain so gave the hike up Eaglecrest a miss.

11 June 2019 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
A very rainy dreary day so good day to stay in and catch up on paperwork and clean this house before I move on to new housesit on Thursday.

10 June 2019 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Morning visit to neighbor Vivien who is housebound at age 91then lunch at Sandpiper with State of Alaska retirees with whom I worked in years past.

9 June 2019 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Morning volunteering at the visitor kiosk greeting tourists then afternoon enjoying Juneau Symphony Boston Pops concert at the high school conducted by Yaniv Attar and with Jessica Choe on piano. Walked the docks of the Juneau Harbor in between and found the two sailboats owned by a friend of mine.

8 June 2019 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Hiked Point Bridget State Park trail to view the wildflowers in full bloom and find a toad! Some of the flowers that we enjoyed are lupine, iris, buttercup, chocolate lily, shooting star, geranium, wild rose, paintbrush, bog orchid, yellow pond lily, cow parsnip, oyster leaf (and the leaf does taste like oyster!), labrador tea, bunchberry/dwarf dogwood, mountain ash and apple tree blossoms. Before arriving at the parking area, I enjoyed watching three bears on the road!

7 June 2019 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Morning visit with my friends Katy and Dan then afternoon walk with neighbor Beatrice out Cohen Drive where we visited another local Bob at his home.

6 June 2019 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Spent the morning cleaning house because I am leaving this housesit then yoga class then back out the road at 19 mile for the next week.

5 June 2019 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Had to give the Wednesday hike a miss because the dentist told me no hiking and no straws and no swishing and no food nor brushing on the side of mouth where I had extraction.....so a bit of grocery shopping and cooking.

4 June 2019 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Volunteer work on board the Golden Princess, the ship on which I will cruise in September! Quite busy but fun and then we ate at the buffet for free. I then did a walkabout of the ship and met a few of the worker folks who will also be on board for my cruise.

3 June 2019 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Morning yoga at the library then afternoon visit to the dentist....I rang them this morning because I was concerned with the pain in my left rear lower molar......and once he looked at it, he decided it was best to pull it out, the crown and root canal and old tooth bits!

2 June 2019 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Heavy morning rain then sunshine!

1 June 2019 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Michelle and I joined several other households of the condos and had a garage sale, only made about $70 but it was fun!

Random thoughts.........
Getting old is mandatory......growing up is optional......
