This month of July has been one of the most sunny and hot on record! The average high temperature for July 2018 was 70.7 (normal is 63.9). It was also the thirteenth driest July on record with 2.82 inches of rain for Juneau compared to the normal July rainfall of 4.60 inches. It was the driest July since 2009.

31 July 2018 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
A gorgeous sunny day for my rellie visitors off the cruise ship Radiance of the Sea (aunt Barbara and her friend Gretchen, daughters Robin (and Mike) and Marcia (and Rob, with kids Kayla and Carter) and a very long day! I hired a Sienna van but we still could not all fit so we did a split while half did floatplane/whale watch, the other half of group joined me for tour of Mendenhall Glacier and all the sights then switched to do it again....perfect timing for them.....sunshine, fireweed in bloom, spawning salmon, heaps of eagles but no bear.

Morning walk then lunch with former IBM coworker at the Douglas Cafe.

23 July 2018 Monday - Juneau Alaska
After putting out the rubbish bin early this morning, I heard noises on the street and saw a bear trying to open the bin then he rolled it across the street into the woods. I had breakfast plans with folks in town so when I returned, I asked the neighbors below me if they had seen a bear carrying a bin! He helped me find it in the woods and it had been opened and dumped on the ground, so much for bear proof containers!

22 July 2018 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
Another sunny warm day for my duty at the visitor kiosk with my former neighbor Don.

21 July 2018 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
The sun just keeps shining!

20 July 2018 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Two hiking friends who I have hiked with for many years turn 80 years young this year so we booked helicopters to fly several of us to the top of Mt Juneau for picnic lunch and short hike on the ridge in the sunshine! We have hiked up and down this mountain during the past several years but today we opted for the easy way up and down.

19 July 2018 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Mexican lunch with the IBM ladies.....

18 July 2018 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
The group hike today was up Mt Roberts to Gold Ridge to celebrate Sondra's birthday but I decided to give it a miss (overcast and rain) for shorter hike on Treadwell trail. And the aquarium bulb burned out again so it must be a problem with the fixture/ballast.

17 July 2018 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Morning workout at the gym then visit to local Petco to purchase light bulb for the aquarium and hope that this one works. The aquarium light went out on Sunday and I replaced with a fluorescent bulb that I found at the house but it burned out so bought another one Monday at hardware store but that one also burned out so found that I may need special bulb for aquarium so hoping that this one, at three times the price, will work.

Another very wet and rainy day in Juneau so opted for a shorter hike with friends up Salmon Creek rather than longer one to Windfall Lake which is on very slippery boards through heaps of mud. Evening encounter with bear in front of the house!

7 July 2018 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
The noise of fireworks continues plus last evening the neighborhood cars (which were unlocked) were robbed.....crime in Juneau has increased astronomically in the past few years.

6 July 2018 Friday - Juneau Alaska

4 July 2018 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Happy Fourth of July from Douglas Alaska.....plan to enjoy the barbq at the fire hall and the smaller Douglas parade....more record high temps in the 80's with sunshine.

3 July 2018 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Morning workout at the gym then in the dentist chair for root canal on number 14....then free barbq at Sandy Beach and a walk along the beach and through the woods to visit the Glory Hole from mining days of past. Then an evening of fireworks.....per the newspaper....

"The Douglas Committee has been doing this for 120 years. This was a mining community and the miners only got two days off through the year, Christmas and the 4th of July. If we did fireworks the night of the fourth, they wouldn't get to see them because they have to go to work at 12:01 on the fifth. This is why the fireworks are done on the evening of the third."

2 July 2018 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Morning chores then afternoon walk on Treadwell trail to visit remains of what was once the zipline that is now abandoned.

1 July 2018 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
