3 February 2022 Thursday - Fort Myers Beach Florida

2 February 2022 Wednesday - Fort Myers Florida (95 miles)
Visit to Pine Island, the largest island on the Gulf Coast of peninsular Florida, at 17 miles long and 2 miles wide (and 118th largest in USA). You first drive through Matlacha, a very colorful quaint art and fishing village, before arriving at the island on which there is one main north south road called Stringfellow. Pine Island is mostly rural farmland, pine forests and marshlands and you will find no pristine beaches. The village of Bokeelia is on northern tip and is known for its many fishing piers, very quiet and serene, with views of the other islands. The small white post office at Pineland is very picturesque and I explored the Calusa Heritage Walk which is part of the Randell Research Center dedicated to archaelogy and history of southwest Florida. St James City is at the southern end and the biggest community on the island. It is mostly residential with collection of waterfront mobile homes, Florida style houses on stilts and an increasing number of very ugly McMansions. A bit of a drive to get there but so very different to the neighboring sprawl of Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

1 February 2022 Tuesday - Fort Myers Florida (43 miles)
Another cold sunny day with wind. Drove Fort Myers Beach road before the crowds and stopped at wonderful market at Santini Plaza then walkabout at Lovers Key State Park amongst the islands and along the beach. In days past this was to be a large resort but saved from construction to become a quiet refuge from the hustle and bustle of this area. Looped back north on route 41 for visit to Koreshan State Park on Estero River. The settlement of 1893 was founded by Cyrus Teed as a religious retreat and most of the original  historical buildings are now an outdoor museum. They were known as a progressive society which promoted women's right to vote, equality of the sexes and education for all.
