August 2013 Alaska USA

Bear at the glacier and me on the beach for our picnic....apologies for the dust on the lens!

Juneau experiences 8th warmest August, 42nd driest
August 2013 in Juneau was warmer and drier than normal.

Meteorologist Geri Swanson says it was eighth warmest on record with an average temperature of 57.9 degrees, 2 degrees above normal.

The temperature exceeded 70 degrees on ten days. The warmest day of the month was 78 on August 12th.

It was the 42nd driest August since record keeping began at the airport in 1945.

Total precipitation for the month was 4.09 inches, point 83 below normal.

The forecaster says it rained on 17 days of the month.

Records were established on the 18th at both the airport and the forecast office on Back Loop Road. At the airport, 1.18 inches was recorded which broke the previous record for the date of point 94 inches set in 1970. Two and three quarters inches fell at the forecast office.

There was also over an inch of rain on the 19th, but no record was set for that date.

Winds averaged 6 miles per hour in August. The peak wind of 28 miles per hour on the 31st was clocked at the airport.

31 August 2013 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
A very rainy Saturday so opted out of the hike for a walk to the local food festival/farmers market where they also had workshops. My neighbor presented Making Sauerkraut and our local naturopath did Kitchen Medicine. And of course, it is the time to chat with friends and nibble on the freebies!

29 August 2013 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
It feels like autumn with a morning chill in the air as I take my early morning walk to the gym at 330am....and clear sky with stars and moon shining! Usually I am gone from Juneau by the beginning of August, driving from Skagway or Haines through the Yukon and BC but decided to stay a bit longer this year to get more done.....and it was definitely the summer to be here.

28 August 2013 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Wednesday hike up Perseverance Trail to Granite Basin....seven miles roundtrip with 1700' elevation gain....and we had a record turnout of about 25 folks on this gorgeous day! We sighted bear, marmots, goats and dippers in the stream.

24 August 2013 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Saturday hike is to Windfall Lake cabin...most likely in the rain!

23 August 2013 Friday - Juneau Alaska
I am volunteering for the State Historical Library and reading the microfilm of the 1938 local newspaper (Juneau Empire) and indexing the obituaries.....and of course, there is so much more to read. I have found that a few films were made by Norman Dawn (Tundra and Orphans of the North) on location in Juneau and at the Taku Glacier Lodge (a few miles south of here) with the then owner Mary Joyce. I found these films and it was great fun to watch these old black and whites of Alaska. I also found another film made in 1949 called Flying Saucer.

18 August 2013 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
And the rains have returned!

Heavy rains Sunday brought new records for date and threat of flooding
A precipitation record for the date was set in Juneau Sunday.

Meteorologist Wes Adkins says 1.18 inches was measured at at the airport which exceeded the previous record of point 94 inches set in 1970.

There was also a record set at the Juneau Forecast Office on Back Loop Road where the measurement was 2.73 inches. That broke the previous record of point 78 inches set in 2005 there.

The heavy rain spurred the issuance of a flood advisory for Montana Creek Sunday morning, although flooding did not occur. The forecaster said levels got really close to the bridge by the gun range, hitting it at one point.

The flood advisory was cancelled at 11 Sunday night.

10 August 2013 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
And the sun just keeps shining....another visit to the glacier to watch bear and spawning salmon and porcupine and to take a short hike.

7 August 2013 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
I am hike leader today so we did the Peterson Lake trail, about nine miles roundtrip with 700' elevation gain. It follows the old horse tram route to the John Peterson family mine (now in ruins) and where the forest service has built a cabin where we had lunch. On our last visit, there was a boat that we took out through the lily pads and enjoyed our lunch on the lake.....and the boat was still there so some went boating and some went swimming in the very cold water (not I)!

6 August 2013 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
Ever since I had new brakes installed in Oregon in May, I have had a new noise.....and when I had them checked in Washington state, they told me it was fixed. I found out today at our local Les Schwab that they had not tightened the nuts properly on the new control arms....finally!

5 August 2013 Monday - Juneau Alaska
And the sun is back! Lunch with a former boyfriend of many years back(to celebrate his 70th birthday!) then a visit to the Mendenhall Glacier to see heaps of salmon spawning and heaps of bear!

4 August 2013 Sunday - Juneau Alaska
This is the first morning that I can remember in the past two months of having to wear a raincoat to my early morning gym workout!

1 August 2013 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Summer continues in Juneau with the forecast for more....record breaking temps throughout the state. The hiking group is having a picnic/potluck today at Eagle Beach to enjoy the company of Maureen, a former Juneau hiker who moved south to Washington state several years ago....should be heaps of fun in the sun!
