May 2013 USA

Plans to take the ferry 31 May from Bellingham to Juneau, arriving Juneau early morning 3 June.

31 May 2013 Friday - Bellingham WA to Juneau AK
Boarding the MV Columbia today for Juneau via Ketchikan, Wrangell and Petersburg!

30 May 2013 Thursday - Bellingham Washington
Early morning walk at Sehome Arboretum then stocking up for ferry ride north. I heard new noises in my van so returned to Les Schwab here to find that they had not done proper greasing.....more woes with mechanics!

27 May 2013 Monday - Salem OR to Sedro Wooley WA
Long drive north today on I5 and it poured down rain the entire time....traffic not too bad for a holiday Monday although a bit crowded around Seattle. Exited I5 at Arlington for route 9 over the Skagit River (closed with broken bridge on I5) then route 20 east toward Mt Baker. Wonderful eve camping at Rasar State Park.....everyone has gone home after the long weekend so had the park to myself.....wonderful trees hanging with moss!

24 May 2013 Friday Salem Oregon
Back in Salem at Les Schwab to finish brake work.....glad that I am not on I5.....bridge collapse at Mt Vernon Washington! Spending the weekend with my friends Dawn and Duane.

21 May 2013 Tuesday - Breitenbush to Bagby Oregon
Leaving the Willamette for the Mt Hood National Forest and it was snowing when I was at the pass of about 4600'! Decided to warm up and get clean and to camp near Bagby Hot Springs which is about 1 1/2 mile oneway walk from the campsite....and the rains have returned but a bit of sun did also peak out!

20 May 2013 Monday - Silver Falls to Breitenbush Oregon
A beautiful day to drive the Cascades Scenic Byway and overnight at Breitenbush Forest Service campground right on the Breitenbush River.

19 May 2013 Sunday - Salem to Silver Falls Oregon
Off to camp again and hiked to falls at Silver Falls State Park.

18 May 2013 Saturday - Salem Oregon
Great brekkie at Word of Mouth restaurant and then perusing of computers....purchased an ipad which is returnable within 15 days....so will give it a try!

17 May 2013 Friday - Salem Oregon
Visited Les Schwab to have my tires rotated and the brakes checked....looks like I need disc pads and they are still under warranty but none currently in stock so need to return next week.

16 May 2013 Thursday
The weather has turned to very heavy rain....plan to visit friends in Salem for the weekend.

15 May 2013 Wednesday
Hikes to Steamboat, Fall Creek, Susan Creek waterfalls.....stopped at Baker Wayside where a very big tree had recently fallen through another tree and onto the outhouse toilet!

14 May 2013 Tuesday - Umpqua River
More waterfall hikes to Clearwater, Whitehorse, Watson, Toketee....I never knew that there were so many different types of waterfalls......horsetail, segmented, punchbowl, plunge, tiered, block, fan, cascade, horsetail!!! Overnight right on the Umpqua River.....just wonderful!

13 May 2013 Monday - Prospect to Lemolo Oregon
Early morning hikes to Mill Creek, Barr Creek and Pearsoney waterfalls and along the Rogue Gorge then slice of Very Berry pie at Betties Cafe in Union Creek. The campgrounds are just starting to open mid May but even rangers at the Forest Service offices cannot tell me which ones are open.....so it is hit and miss as I drive. All were closed at Diamond Lake so continued to Lemolo and found some open and empty and only $5 (half price for seniors with national park pass).

12 May 2013 Sunday - Talent to Prospect Oregon (Rogue River)
Off to explore the waterfall route (Rogue/Umpqua Rivers) on highways 62/230/138. The north rim of Crater Lake is still closed due to snow so will have to give that a miss. Overnight at Joseph Stewart State Park on the Rogue River.

11 May 2013 Saturday - Talent Oregon
Early morning hike up Table Rock then a bit of shopping in salestaxfree Oregon! Finally broke down and purchased a tracfone at Fred Meyer so that I could ring mum on Mother's Day!

10 May 2013 Friday - Talent Oregon
Staying the weekend at a friend's house (former Juneauite) in Talent...he is now in Portland and returns tomorrow. This is a great location between Ashland (home of the Shakespeare Festival that I attended in the 1970's) and very metropolitan Medford and there is now a new Trader Joes in Medford in addition to Fred Meyer and REI! Gorgeous weather so hope to get in a hike or two!
Evening walkabout for the Talent Art and Music Festival...much like our first Friday Art Walks in Juneau with heaps of food and art and music....and a great way to get to know the town of Talent. They gave out a checklist to get signatures at the various shops in order to qualify to win a $200 gift certificate!

8 May Wednesday - Orland CA
Heading north with much quieter stay at a campground where I have been before in almond  and olive country.

7 May Tuesday - Williams CA
I had not visited Wilbur Hot Springs for forty years so thought it would be worth a visit....but not.....a very expensive stay which was very noisy and not as tranquil as they advertise...so left earlier than planned!

6 May 2013 Monday - Rumsey CA
Short drive along the backroads to Cache Creek County Park and overnight sleep to the sounds of the water rambling over the rocks.

5 May 2013 Sunday - Winters CA
Happy Five of May!
Finally got my computer and mail from Annette so am back on the road.....and finally the temps have cooled in San Francisco! No set schedule on my drive north but have sussed out some nice camping spots enroute. Overnight at Lake Solano....all the weekenders have left so nice quiet night with the ducks and peacocks!

1 May 2013 Wednesday (Uvas Canyon Country Park)
I have been camping at Joseph Grant County Park and decided to try another park in the County system that has been closed and reopens today....plus it is very hot and windy here in the Bay Area with several new fires in the hills. Overnite at Uvas Canyon Park with wonderful afternoon hike along the Uvas and Swanson creeks with several small waterfalls.
