USA Juneau Alaska July 2012

Photo of our hike out to the Boys Scout camp on Monday

Plans are to ferry to Haines 30 July then drive via Yukon and British Columbia through eastern Washington and Oregon. Flight out of SFO on 2 October for visits to college gathering in Virginia, mum in Tampa and sister in Raleigh......then November-January in Perth Australia.

31 July 2012 Tuesday (Haines AK)
Awoke to rain....drove to end of road (only about another mile) and when returning, I stopped on the bridge for photos of Chilkoot River and right below me was a brown bear...he had been in the campground the past few days and actually tore up a few tents (no one in them at the time)......and now doing internet at the Captains Choice hotel in town cos library not open until 10!

30 July 2012 Monday (Juneau to Haines AK)
Early morning ride on the MV Columbia ferry from Juneau to Haines....sporadic access to internet for the next few weeks. Departed Juneau 7:15 am and arrival in Haines at noon. Overnighted at Chilkoot Lake State Park, right on the lake and river, where the fisherpeople were catching heaps of salmon.

29 July 2012 Sunday
I bid a fond farewell to the Mendenhall Glacier this morning, for this season anyway, with a walk on the trail to watch the salmon (very red) spawning at Steep Creek.

27 July 2012 Friday
The rains have returned! I visited the allergist today....he visits Juneau every two months from Bellevue WA....and I found that I am allergic to alder/birch/oak trees and italian rye/timothy grass and english plantain weed. And he gave me prescriptions to drugs with unlimited refills (for the next year) for a nose spray and eyedrops. I have not been to a pharmacy in many years so decided to go to the local WalMart because the local pharmacy went out of business and the retiring pharmacist's son is now the new pharmacist at WalMart....anyway, it is unbelievable that I paid $12 for $245 worth of drugs(State of AK retiree health insurance)!

26 July 2012 Thursday
A very unusual clear and sunny day!

25 July 2012 Wednesday
Hiking on Mt Roberts in the sunshine....heaps of wildflowers.....and critters (marmots, grouse, chipmunks but no bear).....cloud and rains returned in the afternoon.

Working at the visitor center kiosk!

14 July 2012 Saturday
Our hike today (in the rain and some sun) is about seven miles rt up Salmon Creek to the dam with a visit to the powerhouse along the way. After lunch at the dam, we walked across the top. Scott Willis of the electric company gave us a tour of the old powerhouse and had the keys to unlock the gate to cross the dam

13 July 2012 Friday the Thirteenth.....survived another rainy day!

12 July 2012 Thursday
A wake up to clear skies and sunshine so a two hour morning walk through this new to me neighborhood.....the clouds returned in the evening, of course!

Another record breaker for weather in Juneau

Juneau breaks 66-year-old temperature record
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The National Weather Service says clear skies caused temperatures to reach record lows across southeast Alaska.

The Juneau airport broke a 66-year-old record for July 12 on Thursday morning, with the temperature falling to 38 degrees. The prior record, set in 1946, was 40 degrees.
The lowest new low, according to the weather service, was 36 degrees, and hit at two other Juneau-area reporting stations and Hyder.
In all, 13 records were set, though some communities, like Juneau, Haines and Skagway, had several reporting stations recording records.

11 July 2012 Wednesday
Housesitting again until the end of July when I will board the ferry out of Juneau to Haines. Unique duties at this house....two tanks of fish and one tank with two bearded dragon lizards that eat two dozen live crickets every three days!

9 July 2012 Monday
Camping for two eves at the Mendenhall Glacier campground....heaps of rain breaking all records:

Over a dozen regional rainfall records broken Monday
Rainfall records across Southeast Alaska were broken on Monday and several records were set for coldest high temperatures for the day as well.

Meteorologist Tim Steffen in the Juneau Forecast Office of the National Weather Service with that word and he says 15 records in total were broken across the region.
Here in Juneau, he says, we broke records both at the airport, at their weather station on Back Loop Road and also at Lena Point and Eaglecrest Ski Area.

The highest rainfall total received on Monday was at Port Snettisham and was 2.02 inches.

Steffen says records were also broken at the Haines Airport, in Hoonah, Sitka, Pelican, Thorne Bay and Annette.

He says there were eight record-low high temperatures broken Monday. Records were broken for the Haines Airport, Hoonah, the Sitka and Juneau Airports, Juneau's weather station, Eaglecrest and at Point Baker, according to Steffen.

The temps ranged from 52 to 57 degrees, he says, and here in Juneau it was 54 degrees at the airport, tying the record that had been set in 2008.

At their weather station it was 52 degrees which broke the old record of 54 degrees from 2007, Steffen says.

The weather seems to be par for the course this summer, which has been characterized by cold temps and rain.

7 July 2012 Saturday
The Saturday hike was Perseverance Trail in the rain....and then the sun came out when we finished!

5 July 2012 Thursday
Housesitting for Marcia while she is in Whitehorse......her home is out the road at 19 mile, right on the water with beautiful views of the mountains.

3 July 2012 Tuesday
Camping at the Mendenhall Glacier Campground at my favorite site!
....but the latest news is that there is flooding just like last summer due to the glacier outburst flood also known as a jokulhlaup (say it “yokel-up”).

2 July 2012 Monday
Lynne and I had planned to hike out at Point Bridget for a walk through the wildflowers but they are widening the road with blasting and delaying traffic so we stopped instead to hike out to the beach at the Boys Scout camp....saw heaps of wildflowers.

1 July 2012 Sunday
Still raining......worked at the kiosk this morning greeting visitors to Juneau.....mostly off the cruise ships but several independent travellers looking for the hiking trails.
