Morning yoga with Carol then fresh halibut at the Sandbar then afternoon walk up the hill with another Carrol (yes, 2 r's) before her travels tomorrow to ABQ for family reunion.

Joined Wednesday hike group for hike on Salmon Creek trail, quite a nice turnout for potentially rainy day but just overcast this morning.

28 August 2023 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Morning visit to Honda dealer for required differential fluid change, three dealers and the website all had differing mileage requirements but decided to just get it done! Sussed out the damage done to the townhomes on the river then visited the Mendenhall Glacier because Monday mornings are the least busy for cruise ships. Walked to the falls, photo point and Steep Creek for spawning salmon, so sad that there is so little left of the glacier that once spanned the lake.

Morning volunteer work at the visitor information kiosk with Don. His wife (my former neighbors) recently passed away after spending several years in a local home with dementia. He shared some wonderful stories. Then to Costco to collect empty boxes for use in my newly acquired storage unit. I had vacated my former storage unit when I had moved my stuff south during covid two years ago but have decided I would like to 'be here' again so even though the waiting list is very long, the storage guy found me a smaller one with built in shelves, just perfect. I had brought with me many items for cold weather and hiking such as kahtoola spikes so will be nice to just leave them here.

26 August 2023 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Saturday hike on Dredge Lake trail system where we first walked the bridge to view the restoration work for the homes on the Mendenhall River damaged by the glacier outburst flooding/jökulhlaup. The trail system is a maze through several lakes and we passed Moose, Crystal, Moraine, Cashew lakes. Then back to downtown to enjoy the annual Food Festival and Farmers Market and of course to meet all the locals. 

25 August 2023 Friday - Juneau Alaska
My friend Michelle and I visited our friend Judy at the newly opened Riverview Senior Center. She was our secretary at IBM in the 1980's and was born and raised in Juneau, a 'local'. She and her husband had moved to Washington state a few years back but when he recently died, she returned to her homeland where her three sons live, two who own the local Ward air flight service. And we were able to join her for lunch in the dining room where we saw several other people who we know!

Followup with the dentist regarding the saliva test results which only confirmed my periodontal issues!

23 August 2023 Wednesday - Juneau Alaska
Another sunny day though not that warm! The Wednesday hike was up Eaglecrest ski area to Mt Troy and cross over the ridge to Dan Moller trail down, which I have done in the past, but not for me today! As described by the leader, this is not a marked trail, the route is steep and muddy, with cliffs suddenly appearing out of nowhere (and I recall being stuck on one trying to figure out the best way down!). Instead I opted for the nice cardio hike up Perseverance Trail, and again meeting several friends enroute.

22 August 2023 Tuesday - Juneau Alaska
A very sunny day for hike on Salmon Creek trail on which there had been a mudslide in December 2020 and taken down many trees. Then visit to fish hatchery to watch the lively salmon (free entry for me as city volunteer). Then visit to Pioneer Home where I had hoped to see another friend who just moved in but she was out with her daughter but saw several other folks instead. Afternoon walk with a friend to her home near to where I am staying for tour of her home!

Happy Senior Citizens Day! with heaps of sunshine!
Returned for apartment viewing but the guy did not show again so the cleaning person did show to me the vacant apartment, top 12th floor corner with view of my former home, but not keen to reside in a highrise plus the unit was very rundown. Then visit to Honda dealer to confirm that they have all the parts for my Friday appointment to fix a recall issue, but no, they do not have the parts and not sure when they will arrive.....so will wait to have done in Florida (not a critical recall). Then great walk on the dike trail at the Mendenhall wetlands. Then visit with my naturopath.

Morning shift at the visitor center kiosk with my friend Michelle so spent time catching up on all the news and gossip!

Saturday hike with the group out the road at 40 mile along Cowee Creek to Echo Cove, about seven miles. Also visited many other sites before and after the hike, Auke Village and Amalga and Eagle Beach and the Shrine of St Therese where we heard the whales

18 August 2023 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Celebrated yoga instructor birthday with hike at Eaglecrest Ski area, good cardio workout which I need after very flat Florida. Then walkabout at Mendenhall wetlands where I met more friends from the past.

Rain and fog today! Spent time at the library digitizing 1977 data processing newsletters that are on microfiche, such interesting discussions were had in those days. Then time at the Pioneer Home with hiking friend Geraldine who lives there and other hiking visitors Linda and Carrol. The staff had baked blueberry carrot bread, delicious!

14 August 2023 Monday - Juneau Alaska
Another wet day! I booked appointment for viewing of Mendenhall Tower apartments but guy was a no show...the woman cleaning in lobby rang him and he is in Anchorage and blamed the computers for sending to me a confirmation...will try again next Monday when he plans to be in Juneau. While in Juneau I have spent time sussing out accommodation for next summer. Continued my research at State library regarding papers written in 1977 on history of data processing at the State. Visited family of my friend Leba who passed away earlier this year. I did not know that her husband's great grandparents had spent time in Skagway during the gold rush, oh what stories!

Morning shift at the kiosk visitor center with Hetty and with more folks to tend to because cruise ship was docked right outside our window...mixed rain and clouds and sun!

A very nasty day for weather with heavy rain and wind, not fun for the boats out fishing in the 77th annual Salmon Derby! Visited the Second Saturday Market at the mall and the local used bookshop where I met another friend from many years ago, she and her husband and I did step aerobics in the 1980's at the local gym.

Morning eye doctor appointment then homemade pizza at the health food store for lunch.

Yoga class then walkabout at Costco where I saw a friend with whom I have been trying to connect since I arrived. Walked into Fred Meyer and heard my name, saw another woman who I have not seen in thirty years!

Excellent guided tour of our State Capitol with heaps of information about our history and the art collection throughout the building (on this very rainy day)!

A rainy foggy day then a bit of clearing for a hike on Treadwell trail.

Early morning dental appointment for cleaning and consult with my dentist, so much better than any work that I have had done down south for the past three years. Then drive out the road to suss out the Mendenhall River. Then visit to Honda dealer to make future appointment regarding recall letter and visit to lawyer to review will stuff.

Morning shift at the kiosk visitor center but no big ship was at our dock so was great to catch up with Mary Ann. Afternoon walk from Cope Park to Basin Road and along the flume trail, my former jogging trail, and of course met several folks along the way.

5 August 2023 Saturday - Juneau Alaska
Afternoon walk of downtown neighborhood before attending the Climate Fair at the whale statue. And then the record breaking news of the jokulhlaup/glacial outburst flood on the Mendenhall River.

4 August 2023 Friday - Juneau Alaska
Morning volunteer work with friends at the Salvation Army sorting donations that then go for sale at their store. Friday midday organ concert at the State Office Building then Mexican lunch at el sombrero catching up with friends on who is where these days. Afternoon walkabout of First Friday art gallery showings.

3 August 2023 Thursday - Juneau Alaska
Overcast cooler day for morning visit to my family doctor, so good to see her again after not being happy with the medical industry of Florida! Walked the seawalk to watch the spawning salmon and the birds feeding on the deceased ones and the newly erected totem poles. Visit with friends at the Alaska Archives to do followup on my research.

My car is now a happy car with Alaska plates! Visit to downtown library for new reading material then walked the docks in the sunshine with the too too many cruise ship folks!

Foggy and rainy morning, back to the Juneau weather we know and love! Walked the two malls of Juneau which have changed over the years but still do contain a few stores. Then visit with friend who owns a local service station and spends time in winter in Arizona.
