Happy Memorial Day!
Lynne and I hiked the Boys Scout camp trail to the beach then visited friends at Amalga Harbor. The smoke from the Funny River fires in the north have made their way to Southeast Alaska....very hazy this afternoon.

The hike today is downtown up Mt Roberts, but gave it a miss (and the long drive) and visited the Jensen Olson Arboretum that is just down the road for their free open house. I then joined Aja and Gladi for a hike on the three mile Breadline Bluff trail which was not easy climbing over all the fallen trees.

I am housesitting about 20 miles north of Juneau, right on the water....it has been great to watch the eagles and listen to the whales and watch the beautiful sunsets! The only problem is that it is a long drive to town, and expensive, so I take the whole day to get many errands done.....or wait until I am housesitting downtown starting 11 June for a month.

The Wednesday hike with Parks and Rec is Granite Basin where I am sure there is still snow so will probably only go up as far as Perseverance Trail.....there is a bit of sun and blue sky this morning so hoping that it will last....and it did for a great hike!

Arrived in Juneau midday and am now staying for two weeks in a house about twenty miles from Juneau......as I departed the ferry terminal, there was a mum bear and three cubs eating dandelions by the side of the road!
17 May 2014 Saturday depart Prince Rupert BC Canada
I am booked on the ferry Matanuska from Prince Rupert BC Canada to Juneau Alaska....departs 10am Saturday with stops in Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg then Juneau midday on Sunday.
A good time to depart Canada since this is the long weekend (Victoria Day on Monday) and everyone is on holiday, all the campgrounds are fully booked and the lakes and rivers will be full of boats!

Picked up my ticket at the ferry terminal then a walkabout town and lunch at Dollys for fresh halibut cheek burger.....yummy!

Stopped in Terrace for internet and coffee at Tim Hortons again! Beautiful drive on highway 16 (the Yellowhead) along the Skeena River.
13 May 2014 Tuesday - Telkwa to Terrace BC
Morning stop in Smithers for internet and coffee at Tim Hortons (the Starbucks of Canada) and then Safeway for food.....trying to decide whether to go 100 miles out of my way to visit Lava Beds north of Terrace....rain is predicted........overnight at Kleanza Creek Provincial Park. Local folks tell me that the campground at Lava Beds is very poorly maintained and that the road is subject to flooding so will give it a miss.

Overnight at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park near Telkwa.....a great two hour hike to the site of the Aldermere village overlooking the Bulkley River.

Awoke to a flat tire and of course it is Sunday (and happy mum's day!) but had a great day meeting new people and washing and cleaning my van. Thank goodness the park host had air compressor so put in some air to get me to tire place on Monday for patch.

8 May 2014 Thursday - Kamloops to Green Lake BC Canada
I had hoped to camp at Green Lake Provincial Park but all is closed (many BC provincial parks do not open until 15 May for the long weekend)....beautiful day for diversion to Marble Canyon on route 99 then stop at Chasm for viewing of great geologic formation. Camped at Watch Lake Lodge, right on Watch Lake all by myself (and the loons and ducks and geese)....great chat with the owners who have had this ranch since 1950!
6 May 2014 Tuesday - Kettle Falls WA to Rock Creek BC Canada
Another gorgeous morning drive over Sherman Pass to Republic WA where I filled the tank before heading north to Canada via Ferry WA/Midway BC. Stopped enroute at the smallest Washington State Park, Ranald MacDonald's gravesite overlooking the Kettle River (size 100 square feet).Relatively unknown to the citizens of his own country, MacDonald is fondly remembered by the Japanese for the role he played in helping them learn more about the English language and Western culture.

Heading north on 395 to Kettle Falls....overnight at Lake Roosevelt, another very low water lake.
4 May 2014 Sunday - Lewiston ID to Spokane WA
Beautiful morning drive on route 195 north through rolling farmland and old barns. I forgot about Bloomsday (even though I had heard it on the news) so got rerouted because of closed streets and traffic.....but did get my shopping done at Trader Joes and REI with overnight at Riverside State Park Nine Mile Falls.
2 May 2014 Friday - Kamiah to Lewiston ID (69 miles)
Morning stop to visit Suzanne in Peck (she and I worked together in Juneau). I had planned to stay with her but have gotten a bad case of the flu (probably the worst I have had in a very long time) so continued on to Lewiston to hotel it and sweat it out.
